Road safety is one of the most important public health problems in Europe and in the world. The World Health Organization estimates that every year, according to the statistics, 1.2 million people are known to die in road accidents worldwide. So, the European commission consider that road safety directly affects all of the territory of the European Union and all its inhabitants:

  • In the EUR-15, 375 million road users, 200 million of them driving licence holders, use 200 million vehicles on 4 million km of roads. Data that increase in the EUR-25.
  • Ever greater mobility comes at a high price: 1 300 000 accidents a year cause 40 000 deaths and 1 700 000 injuries on the roads. The direct and indirect cost of this carnage has been estimated at €160 billion, i.e. 2% of EU GNP.

The strategies on safety road have proved that the deaths and disabilities caused by the accidents can be avoided with an effort on 5 elements:

  • To fight against the excessive and improper speed, and driving under the effects of the alcohol;
  • To promote the use of the helmet, the seat belt ant other security devices;
  • To improve the visibility of the pedestrians and cyclists;
  • To improve the design of roads and vehicles;
  • To apply the norm of road safety; to improve the services of emergency intervention.

The three first elements depend directly on each person and, in this sense, the education is a key point to affect the habits and the sensitization of the adults for its present security, as well as the behaviour of its children, who tend to reproduce the attitudes that they see.
