Project Aims and Objectives

The main aim of the project is to contribute to the mainstreaming of equality within the European steel industry. First, the project will develop equality and diversity materials and learning programmes for workers in the European steel industry. These will be designed to address questions of inequality, exclusion and discrimination within the industry. The learning programmes and training materials will address generic equal opportunity concerns, as well as responding to the specific equality and diversity ‘needs’ of different categories of worker. Second, a set of briefing papers (on aspects of exclusion, discrimination, diversity and equal opportunities within the industry) will be prepared and promoted. These will identify areas of concern, as well as existing good practice, and make recommendations for policy formulation by stakeholders to further promote and value equality and diversity learning within the industry.

The project will consist of a series of related activities, designed to identify and address education and training needs in relation to equality and diversity issues.

  • First, research activity will inform the development of the curricula and pedagogy of the modules, and the development of a series of briefing papers.

  • Second, the project will develop and pilot/present the following:

(a) design, develop, test and assess on-line materials on equality and diversity themes for inclusion within established industry training programmes (where appropriate paper-based materials will be developed);

(b) design, develop, test and assess a tutor guidance handbook on equality and diversity teaching and learning, aimed at trainers in the industry;

(c) the development and presentation of briefing documents aimed at stakeholders and promoting equality and diversity teaching and learning in the industry.
